USL Academy signing became youngest goalscorer in a women’s professional soccer match in the United States with debut strike
For every young player, simply making their debut in the professional ranks is an achievement.
When Dallas Trinity FC’s Rhea Moore stepped onto the field in her Gainbridge Super League debut with 16 minutes to go against Sporting Club Jacksonville on September 6, it was remarkable enough.
What happened next saw Moore’s name get etched into U.S. Soccer’s record book.
Controlling an errant pass in the attacking third, Moore strode forward with her first two touches and unleashed a low strike to the bottom-left corner of the net, the only goal as Trinity claimed a 1-0 victory on the road at Hodges Stadium.
With it, Moore became the youngest goalscorer in a women’s professional soccer match in the United States, aged 15 years, 332 days old.
“This is just a dream come true,” said Moore postgame. “I’m super happy. My team was just supporting and cheering for me… It feels amazing. I’m super happy and grateful that all my teammates were there and I got this opportunity.”
For her historic moment, Moore has been selected as September’s Prinx Impact Sub of the Month, a new series highlighting key substitutions that have changed the course of a game this season.
Moore is among the prodigious young talent currently emerging across the women’s soccer landscape. A native of Sacramento, Calif., she came to Dallas as a USL Academy signing after initially approaching the club and Head Coach Chris Petrucelli about the potential to make the step up from the youth ranks.
Her progression is being handled carefully – Moore has logged three appearances through the first month-and-a-half of the season – but the potential of the current University of Southern California recruit is evident to Petrucelli.
“She still has a long journey ahead of her,” he told The Athletic. “She’s not a complete player yet – no one is at 15 – but she continues to get better.”
Hopefully, there will be much more to come for Moore in the months and years ahead.
The first impression she delivered, though, will be something special forever.
