The top four teams in the Gainbridge Super League standings are in action this Saturday with a top-four clash between second-place Lexington SC and fourth-place Carolina Ascent FC leading off a tripleheader on Peacock, starting at 2 p.m. ET.
Here are three questions we have going into the action.
1. Is this the moment Lexington breaks through against Carolina?
Lexington SC has produced all manner of superlatives in the Gainbridge Super League’s second season. At the top of the list is the club’s active 16-game regular season undefeated streak dating to the final game of the 2024/25 campaign. It’s closely followed by the club’s scoring prowess, which sees Catherine Barry in contention for the Golden Boot after her third brace of the campaign against Fort Lauderdale United FC last Saturday and the club overall sitting first in the league in both goals (31) and Expected Goals (28.95xG).
The one thing LSC has yet to accomplish in its short history, though, is earn victory against Carolina Ascent FC. Entering Saturday’s game at American Legion Memorial Stadium (2 p.m. ET | Peacock), Ascent holds a 2-0-3 record in meetings between the clubs. That includes a 1-1 draw in their most recent meeting on October 10 that proved a narrow escape for Lexington, when Addie McCain scored in the seventh minute of second-half stoppage time to earn the hosts a point.
After the dominant display Lexington put in last weekend, though, this could be the moment for the breakthrough to happen. Carolina is coming off three consecutive scoreless outings with its attack unable to consistently capitalize on its chances – Ascent now sits with 19 goals on 23.56 Expected Goals, the widest deficit in the league. If Lexington finds a win it would stretch its lead on Carolina to 10 points. That would potentially set up a two-team race for the Players’ Shield.
2. Can DC Power back up Gianna Gourley, spring a surprise?
Over the past 12 months since her arrival at DC Power FC, Gianna Gourley has been a one-player wrecking machine. Recently signed to a contract extension through the 2026/27 season, the forward leads the league since February 1, 2025 with 15 goals, 99 shots, 37 shots on target and 13.37 Expected Goals, while also putting up a 20 percent shot conversion rate.
The problem for the Power has been a lack of back-up for Gourley’s exploits. This season, the 25-year-old has recorded either the goal or assist on 52.6% of the side’s goals, with no teammate having recorded more than two goals or four goal contributions. That’s where DC is hoping its new additions this winter can make an impact. Both Hannah Richardson and Alyssa Walker could make their debuts for the Power on Saturday as they visit league-leaders Sporting Club Jacksonville (5 p.m. ET | Peacock). Richardson recorded three goals in 1,094 minutes for Lexington SC while Walker logged two goals in 125 minutes for Carolina Ascent FC previously in the league, and while those might not seem like much, the strike rates are solid enough.
After sitting out the opening weekend of the spring schedule, there would certainly be easier assignments than heading to Jacksonville for DC to try and find some attacking chemistry, but we’re intrigued as to how Head Coach Omid Namazi deploys his new players.
3. Can Dallas Trinity find its scoring touch in Fort Lauderdale?
On one hand, Dallas Trinity’s 1-1 draw against Brooklyn FC achieved a couple of things. It moved the side up one spot in the standings after Carolina Ascent’s loss to Sporting Club Jacksonville, and it extended the club’s undefeated streak to five games, only two shy of the club’s all-time record.
The way the game against Brooklyn played out over the 90 minutes, though, wasn’t great for the hosts as new Head Coach Nathan Thackarey took the reins for the first time. Most notable was the lack of attacking punch the side delivered, which saw it outshot 14-5 by BKFC and key players like Alexis Missimo unable to make an impact. The talented midfielder didn’t record a shot or chance created in the contest.
Trinity still has a game in hand on the top two, but after both Jacksonville and Lexington’s wins the gap has stretched to six points. For Dallas, that makes Saturday’s trip to Fort Lauderdale United FC (8 p.m. ET | Peacock), which is winless in five games and has conceded nine times in its last four outings, a chance to reinvigorate its attack and make sure the gap doesn’t grow any further.
