Brazilian’s spectacular first goal for BKFC began thrilling second half against Fort Lauderdale that delivered six-goal thriller
Having earned an equalizer through Catherine Zimmerman late in the first half on the road against Fort Lauderdale United FC, Brooklyn FC was building momentum as the halftime whistle arrived.
With his halftime move, bringing on Mylena Freitas as an attacking substitute on the right side, BKFC Head Coach Tomás Tengarrinha aimed to add to that momentum.
“The idea behind bringing Mylena on was simply to add freshness down the flank,” said Tengarrinha. “The message to the group was to keep doing what we had been doing, stay focused, and trust the work we’d put in up to that point.”
As it turned out, it took only 19 seconds for the Brazilian to make her presence felt.
After Brooklyn turned possession over moments after the opening kickoff it produced a sharp piece of interplay on the left that released Zimmerman into space on the flank. She took a touch and then delivered a back-post cross where Freitas was arriving ahead of her marker to unleash a brilliant first-time strike into the roof of the net.
For her performance, Freitas has been selected as February’s Prinx Impact Sub of the Month, a new series highlighting key substitutions that have changed the course of a game this season.
Freitas came aboard in Brooklyn at the start of the 2025/26 Gainbridge Super League season, and her finish on February 21 marked her first goal for the club. It also sparked a dramatic second half that saw Fort Lauderdale rally twice to earn a 3-3 draw at Beyond Bancard Field in one of the most entertaining games of the season so far.
With 11 games to play in the regular season, Brooklyn remains in contention for a first trip to the Gainbridge Super League Playoffs, entering Saturday’s home contest against DC Power FC on a three-game undefeated streak.
With more performances like the one Freitas produced in South Florida, BKFC could bridge the gap to the top four of the final three months of the regular season.
