Title-winners square off as Tampa Bay hosts Lexington; Brooklyn, Fort Lauderdale square off for second time in campaign

Welcome to The Weekender, where we’ll get you set up for what you need to know going into the Week 8 slate in the 2026 Gainbridge Super League fall season.
This weekend features two games on the docket with the Super League’s first two title-winners set to meet on Sunday evening as Tampa Bay Sun FC hosts Lexington SC, while we also have the first rematch of the campaign as Brooklyn FC faces Fort Lauderdale United FC on Friday night.
Here’s what we’re looking out for.
1. Game of the Weekend – Tampa Bay Sun FC vs. Lexington SC
The first two Gainbridge Super League champions meet as Tampa Bay Sun FC (2-1-2, 8pts) and Lexington SC (3-2-0, 9pts) both have the chance to move above the playoff line on Sunday evening at Suncoast Credit Union Field (5 p.m. ET | Peacock) with both entering on positive runs of form.
With the Sun the lone side currently to have taken victory against league-leaders Carolina Ascent this campaign, the game also marks another litmus test for the squad as it aims to return to the postseason this fall.
- RISING SUN: While sitting in sixth place after their bye week, the Sun have produced some impressive performances so far this campaign. Led by forward Shea Connors, who sits tied for second in the league with four goals, and playmaker Sydny Nasello, the side has recorded eight goals in its opening five games of the campaign which has helped the side build a three-game undefeated streak as it returns for his second home outing of the season.
- DYNAMIC DUO: After suffering consecutive defeats, Lexington has rebounded positively with victories over its past two outings, the most recent of which against Dallas Trinity FC saw its two attacking standouts break out. Catherine Barry’s two-goal performance coupled with Addie McCain’s second goal of the season earned a 3-0 victory against a Trinity side that had put together a three-game winning streak of its own, as Lexington cashed in on its consistent chance creation so far this season.
- WEATHER THE PRESSURE: The key for Tampa Bay is likely to be in maintaining its solid defensive performance so far this season. The Sun currently sport the lowest Expected Goals Against mark in the league at 6.35xGA – an average of 1.27xGA per game – as their back line led by Vivienne Bessette has done well to limit clear opportunities for opponents. Facing the lone attack to currently average greater than 2.00xG per game this season – Lexington sits at an average of 2.1xG per outing – Tampa Bay will need to maintain its structure to keep LSC’s attacking threats at bay.
Tampa Bay struggled with that attacking challenge a season ago. Lexington’s Barry scored four goals in the three meetings between the clubs as LSC went 2-0-1 in the regular season series. If the Sun can find a win here, it would burnish their credentials as a challenger this season as Lexington looks to maintain its pursuit of Carolina in first.
2. The Rest of the Weekend’s Action

Brooklyn FC vs. Fort Lauderdale United FC (Friday, 7 p.m. ET | Peacock)
Having squared off in late August, Brooklyn FC (1-5-0, 3pts) and Fort Lauderdale United FC (1-5-0, 3pts) meet for the second time this season at Maimonides Park in a game that could best be described as one where it’s going to be getting late early for the losing party.
- EARLY JUMP: Fort Lauderdale claimed the meeting on August 28 as Nicole Vernis scored just 28 seconds into the second half at Amerant Bank Field in a 1-0 win, but since then things haven’t gone to plan for Head Coach Tyrone Mears’ squad. Fort Lauderdale has suffered four consecutive defeats since then, including a late 2-1 loss to DC Power FC in Week 7. Each of the past three losses have come by a single goal, but with only four goals to show in the campaign the visitors need to start making more of their opportunities to get back into the playoff race.
- STEM THE FLOW: Brooklyn sprang one of the big surprises of the season so far when it picked up its first victory against Sporting Club Jacksonville in its last home outing on September 13, but that was followed by a 1-0 loss at Carolina Ascent FC that saw the side match a Super League low with only two shots at American Legion Memorial Stadium. That result left BKFC with a league-high 12.11 Expected Goals Against mark, making the side the lone club currently this season to be averaging above 2.00xGA per game.
- NEW FACE: There will be a new face leading the way on the sideline for Brooklyn this weekend, with assistant coach Errol McFarlane standing in for Head Coach Alex Smith, who is currently overseas completing his Pro Coaching License Course. Back on home turf, BKFC will be trying to break a four-game winless run against Fort Lauderdale as both sides bid to avoid sitting at the foot of the Super League standings.
As challenging as this season has been so far for both Brooklyn and Fort Lauderdale, the individual talent that could make a difference for either side is worth watching. Fort Lauderdale United’s Sh’nia Gordon has notched a pair of goals for her side this campaign, as has BKFC’s Catherine Zimmerman but both grade as two of the top forwards in American Soccer Analysis’ database this season with Gordon sitting second in the league with a +1.86 Goals Added mark and Zimmerman in third at +1.84.
How that duo performs could be a key element as to which side gets back in the win column.
3. Kit of the Week – Brooklyn FC’s Home Kit

Brooklyn FC’s home kit from New Balance is a holdover from the second half of the 2025/26 campaign, but we like the details, including an architectural nod to the arches of the Brooklyn Bridge, the columns of the Brooklyn Museum, and crests of Coney Island rollercoasters. Get yours at the club’s online store.
4. Landmark of the Week – Lexington SC’s Catherine Barry
Barry enters her side’s contest against Tampa Bay Sun FC with 19 regular season goals in her Super League career. If she finds the net, she’d be the first player in Super League history to record 20 regular season goals for one club, and just the second to reach the landmark overall.
