Carolina’s Guion scores goal to remember, Brooklyn earns result in league debut | Week 4 Storylines

Week 4 of the USL Super League season was a good one with all eight teams taking the field and 12 total goals making it into the back of the net. Here are some of the highlights from last weekend. 

GUION OLIMPICO

Carolina Ascent’s Renée Guion already put up a strong contender for September Goal of the Month with a beauty in Friday’s match. The defender stepped up to take the corner kick in the 26th minute and sent it to the back post, but instead of connecting with a teammate, it curled into the net for her first goal of the season. 

“I’d love to say it was [intentional],” Guion said. “We practice different types of set pieces all the time. To be able to curl it in like that was a great way to start off my scoring with this team.” 

BROOKLYN SCORES IN SEASON DEBUT

Brooklyn FC played its first match of the season at Spokane Zephyr on Sunday night and came away with a point after a hard-fought battle. Despite going down a goal in the first half, Brooklyn drew a foul inside the box in the 85th minute, and Jessica Garziano converted from the spot for the club’s first goal. 

5-GOAL THRILLER IN LEXINGTON HOME OPENER

Lexington Sporting Club Stadium saw a lot of action in its opening match as Tampa Bay Sun defeated the home side 3-2 on Sunday. Tampa jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first half with goals from Natalia Staude and Carlee Giammona. Madison Parsons got one back for Lexington before Ashley Clark put Tampa back ahead by two goals. Marykate McGuire scored the last goal of the match in the 83rd minute, beating the goalkeeper 1v1. 

DC RECORDS FIRST GOAL ON THE ROAD

Jorian Baucom not only gets to say she scored DC Power FC’s first goal in club history, but the forward also scored it on the road at the iconic Cotton Bowl Stadium. In Saturday’s 1-1 draw between DC and Dallas Trinity, Baucom intercepted a pass in Dallas’ defensive third, took a touch past the keeper and slotted it home.

The Super League continues to provide more and more opportunities for women in sports, proven last weekend when all 16 of the referees from Week 4 were female.

  • Carolina Ascent defender Ashlynn Serepca will battle against Fort Lauderdale United’s Felicia Knox for the first time since the two were playing together for the Alabama Crimson Tide in 2022.   

Players to Watch

CAR – Mia Corbin: The August Goal of the Month winner showed her precision and composure in Carolina’s last match when she blasted a shot from the top of the box to equalize and earn the team a point. She also created four chances while winning six duels during the match. 

FTL – Sh’Nia Gordon: West Virginia alum Sh’Nia Gordon was on fire in the teams opening match in Week 1. The midfielder recorded four shots and created three chances in her first start with the club and will be a key piece in the team’s attack this season.

Things to Know

  • Dallas Trinity will host its league home opener at the historic Cotton Bowl. The Cotton Bowl has a rich history in American soccer, hosting FIFA World Cup matches, CONCACAF Gold Cup matches and international friendlies, including last weekend’s friendly between Dallas Trinity and FC Barcelona.   
  • DC Power will be on the road for its third straight match as it looks to secure its first win and goal. 

Players to Watch

DAL – Chioma Ubogagu: The English international earned a spot on the August Team of the Month after her stellar performance in Dallas’ opening match against Tampa. Ubogagu has strength and speed on the left side and showed her ability to create opportunities and send great balls into the box. 

DC – Katrina Guillou: The midfielder is a strong asset on both sides of the ball for DC. In Power FC’s last match, Guillou had two tackles and one clearance on defense while also creating one chance and blasting off a shot that forced Tampa’s goalkeeper to make an incredible save.

  • Tampa Bay Sun will be on the road for the first time after opening the season with two draws at home. 
  • Tampa’s goalkeeper Ashley Orkus was named Player of the Month for August after her incredible performances in the club’s first two matches. 

Players to Watch

LEX – Shea Moyer: The captain looked strong in Lexington’s opening match against Carolina, maintaining over 87% passing accuracy while winning six duels and four tackles. She can quickly win the ball in the midfield and get the team into a counterattack, which has proved to be a challenge for Tampa. 

TB – Riley Parker: The striker’s would-have-been first goal of the season was called offside in the Sun’s last match, but it’s only a matter of time before Parker gets on the scoresheet officially. She is tied for second in the league with four shots and will be one of the biggest problems for Lexington’s backline on Sunday.

  • Brooklyn will make its Super League debut on Sunday against Lexington as the eighth and final club to take the field this season. 
  • Brooklyn’s Hope Breslin will go head-to-head with Spokane Zephyr defender Katie Murray after the two were key members of the University of Illinois Fighting Illini from 2017-2018. 

Players to Watch

SPK – Marley Canales: The former UCLA star held down the midfield for Spokane in its opening match. Canales won five duels, three tackles and recorded two interceptions while maintaining 85% passing accuracy. 

BKN – Sam Rosette: The Bronx native will be one to watch in Brooklyn FC’s first match of the season. The defender played in the Champions League in France after finishing her collegiate career at Villanova. In her two years as a Wildcat, Rosette played over 2,000 minutes and recorded six goals and three assists.

5 Things to Know About Brooklyn FC

Leading up to the inaugural USL Super League season kicking off this weekend, we’re dropping five facts about each club. Up next is Brooklyn FC.

1. Brooklyn FC’s inaugural roster features USL W League star Sydney Martinez

Brooklyn’s first league signing was none other than USL W League and University of Southern Florida standout Sydney Martinez. The goalkeeper won the Golden Glove and Final MVP in her championship season with South Georgia Tormenta FC, and she earned numerous honors during her five-year career at USF. She’s also made multiple appearances with the Puerto Rico women’s national team, most recently at the 2024 Concacaf W Gold Cup. 

2. The club’s ownership group includes USMNT’s Tim Weah

Juventus midfielder and USMNT star Timothy Weah was announced in May as the newest member of the BKFC ownership group. Weah is a decorated athlete, having won league titles with Paris Saint-Germain and Celtic FC and the 2023 CONCACAF Nations League Finals with the U.S. Weah was born and raised in Brooklyn. 

3. Maimonides Park is the home venue for Brooklyn FC

Brooklyn FC announced Maimonides Park in Coney Island will be the home site for the upcoming season. The stadium, which hosts over 7,000 spectators, has been the longtime home of the New York Mets’ High-A affiliate, the Brooklyn Cyclones. Tickets to its home opener on Saturday, August 31 against Carolina Ascent can be purchased here.  

4. Taylor Smith brings experience to Brooklyn’s backline

Brooklyn FC announced this month that former USWNT defender Taylor Smith as its newest addition to the 2024/25 Super League roster. Smith made multiple appearances for the U.S. youth national teams before earning 10 caps for the senior squad. She is joining BKFC from NWSL side NJ/NY Gotham FC, where she supported the team on its path to secure its first NWSL Championship title. 

5. The club’s crest represents the city’s history and architecture 

As stated by Brooklyn FC: “The “B” references Old English typography, nodding to Brooklyn’s former name, Kings County, and features a representation of the Bridge at its heart. The Limestone shade, the primary color of our women’s team, is also inspired by the landmark’s foundations.”

W League alums set to compete in inaugural Super League season

Ever since the USL W League launched in 2022, its purpose has been to develop the next generation of women’s talent and enhance the pipeline between college and professional soccer. Later this month, that purpose will come to fruition right within the USL’s own ecosystem. 

The inaugural 2024/25 USL Super League season kicks off on August 17, and 52 W League alums will be a part of it. Each one of the eight Super League clubs will have at least two former W League players on their rosters, with one club having as many as 10. 

Many of these players were a part of the first W League season two years ago and have gone on to play professionally elsewhere before returning to USL to join the Super League. Others were just with their W League clubs competing this summer after finishing their college careers. 

In total, 25 W League clubs will be represented this season in the Super League. Not only are the alums bringing their exceptional talents to the new league, but some are coming in with championship experience. Sydney Martinez, a goalkeeper for Brooklyn FC, won the inaugural W League title and Final MVP with South Georgia Tormenta FC, and Carolina Ascent FC defender Annika Creel was a part of the 2023 championship run with Indy Eleven. 

The W to Super League pipeline also extends farther than just players. Former FC Olympia head coach Ben Willis led the W League club to an undefeated first half of the 2024 season before departing to join Lexington SC’s coaching staff. 

With both leagues expanding in the coming years, this is just the first group of alums who are making the leap. It will be exciting to see how that group grows over time and how the players continue to prove the efficacy of the pathway.

Brooklyn Football Club Announces Sydney Martinez, Puerto Rican National Team Star Goalkeeper, as First to Sign with Club

The star keeper comes to Brooklyn after being named the USL W League Final MVP and playing abroad in Europe

Brooklyn, N.Y., May 17, 2024 – Brooklyn Football Club today announced Sydney Martinez as the club’s first player signing ahead of the inaugural 2024/25 USL Super League season, pending league and federation approval. The star goalkeeper is coming to Brooklyn after most recently playing professionally abroad for Norwegian club IK Grand Bodø. Martinez, who grew up in Rincon, Georgia, is the starting keeper of the Puerto Rican women’s national team. Martinez was the USL W League Final MVP and made history as the first Golden Glove winner for her former club South Georgia Tormenta FC, where she also served as team captain.

USL Super League Unveils Fall Schedule of Inaugural Season and League Competition Structure

  • New women’s professional league to play a balanced 28-match regular season 
  • Four-team, single elimination playoffs will determine inaugural USL Super League champion

TAMPA, Fla. (May 30, 2024) – The USL Super League today unveiled the Fall Schedule of the 2024/25 inaugural season. The Fall Schedule will kick off on Saturday, August 17, and close out on Saturday, December 14, ahead of a Winter Break.

The Fall will see each club play a balanced 14-match schedule – seven at home and seven away – followed by a similarly balanced 14-match schedule in the Spring. The Spring Schedule will kick off in February. 

In total, the inaugural USL Super League season will consist of 112 regular season matches.  

“Releasing the Fall Schedule is another milestone in the formation of the USL Super League,” said Amanda Vandervort, USL Super League President. “Competing on a fall-to-spring calendar and playing a balanced schedule further aligns the league with the global game, which has always been our strategy. The Super League is thrilled to be providing elite players the opportunity to compete at the highest level and give fans the chance to watch top-tier on-field competition.” 

USL Super League clubs have begun building their rosters and will convene for preseason starting on July 1.  

INAUGURAL COMPETITION STRUCTURE & PLAYOFF FORMAT 

The USL Super League’s inaugural season features a balanced regular season schedule, with each club playing 28 regular-season matches – 14 at home and 14 away – followed by playoffs.  

Structuring the schedule in two phases – Fall Schedule and Spring Schedule, separated by a Winter Break – allows the league to provide the players with an important mid-season break to rest and recover and ensures that fans can enjoy the highest quality of action throughout the season. 

The full regular season will run from August 2024 to late May 2025.  

At the conclusion of the regular season, the top four teams in the league table standings will qualify for the 2024/25 USL Super League Playoffs.  

The inaugural USL Super League Playoffs will consist of a single-elimination, fixed-bracket format featuring two semifinals and a final. The postseason will culminate in the 2024/25 USL Super League Final, where the first-ever champions will be crowned.

Timothy Weah joins Brooklyn Football Club as part of Ownership Group

JUVENTUS FORWARD AND USMNT INTERNATIONAL BECOMES NEWEST MEMBER OF OWNERSHIP GROUP

Brooklyn, N.Y. – Brooklyn Football Club today announced that Juventus forward and USMNT international Timothy Weah has become the newest member of the BKFC ownership group. Weah originally broke through at Paris Saint-Germain in 2018, winning Ligue 1 twice and the Trophée des Champions once. He also won the Scottish Premiership and Scottish Cup double while on loan at Celtic in 2019. Tim added another Ligue 1 title and Trophée des Champions with Lille in 2021.

“Tim is a tremendous ambassador for Brooklyn FC, and we are thrilled to welcome him to the ownership group,” said Mack Mansfield, CEO of Brooklyn FC. “In addition to achieving excellence on the pitch, Tim is deeply committed to joining us in our mission to give back to Brooklyn communities and further grow the sport that has given us so much. Tim has been a focal point of the USMNT since earning his first cap in March 2018. Weah was a part of the squad that won the 2021 and 2023 CONCACAF Nations League Finals and represented the USA at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

USL Super League Unveils Home Openers for Inaugural Season

America’s newest professional women’s soccer league set to kick off August 17  

TAMPA, Fla. (May 23, 2024) – The highly anticipated inaugural season of the USL Super League will kick off Saturday, August 17, launching an exciting slate of home openers for the league’s eight inaugural clubs and beginning an exciting new chapter for professional women’s soccer.  

The kickoff weekend of the USL Super League will feature coast-to-coast action. Carolina Ascent FC will start the ball rolling on the evening of Saturday, August 17, welcoming DC Power FC to downtown Charlotte’s American Legion Memorial Stadium. Later that night, Spokane Zephyr FC hosts Fort Lauderdale United FC at One Spokane Stadium. On Sunday, Tampa Bay Sun FC will cap off the opening weekend by hosting Dallas Trinity FC at Riverfront Stadium. 

Following the three matches of the kickoff weekend, five more home openers will take place over the subsequent weeks.

Brooklyn FC reveal “shared identity” for USL Super League brand

Brooklyn Football Club today announced it would adopt the same logo and core branding for all of its teams, including the USL Super League team set to kickoff in August. The decision to use a single name, brand, and logo was made to reinforce “a shared identity, ethos, ambition, and values” across the club, from its professional teams to its academy program.

“Our club is built on the principles of inclusion and empowering our next generation of leaders,” stated Brooklyn Football Club CEO Mack Mansfield. “The launch of our USL Super League team in August, competing at the highest level of professional soccer in our country, allows us to provide a platform to grow and elevate the women’s professional game for our city. By utilizing the same logo for both our USL Super League and Championship teams, we are able to better align the core values of the club while still giving each team their own unique tone and vision.”

Brooklyn FC also announced today that fans are now able to purchase ticket deposits for home matches at Maimonides Park, the club’s home venue located in the historic Coney Island section of Brooklyn. Click here for more info. 

With the announcement of Brooklyn FC’s brand, six of the eight inaugural USL Super League clubs have now publicly revealed their names, colors, and visual identities. The final two, Super League Dallas/Fort Worth and Super League Washington, D.C., are expected to unveil their brands in the coming weeks.
