The 2025/26 Gainbridge Super League returned on Saturday night and saw the top two contenders for the Players’ Shield make their mark, setting up a potential two-team race for the first silverware of the season between Sporting Club Jacksonville and Lexington SC over the coming months.
Elsewhere, Dallas Trinity and Spokane Zephyr were unable to capitalize after holding leads, while Tampa Bay Sun FC is still looking for its first home win of the season.
Here are four things we took away from the action in Week 17.
1. Sporting JAX Delivers Late Again Through Pennock
One of the hallmarks of Sporting Club Jacksonville’s inaugural season has been its ability to deliver late goals. The side entered the spring season tied for the league-lead with seven tallies in the final 15 minutes and stoppage time, including three game-tying goals that had helped put the side top of the Gainbridge Super League standings.
On Saturday night against Carolina Ascent FC, however, Jade Pennock delivered a first which helped ensure Sporting JAX remained a point ahead of Lexington SC in the standings. The English forward, brought on as a second-half substitute, capitalized brilliantly on Paige Kenton’s knockdown with five minutes to go for the latest game-winning goal Jacksonville has registered this season, earning a 1-0 win at Hodges Stadium.
In a top-three clash where Jacksonville goalkeeper Kaitlyn Parks had to be on her game with a four-save shutout, the hosts came through to create separation from the third-placed Ascent with their latest clutch moment.
“I honestly think our practices are so competitive, it prepares us for the games really well,” said Kenton, who bagged her league-leading sixth assist. “I think everybody on the team brings something different and unique, and when we compete in practice, it just feels like any opponent in the league.”
2. Sideline Transition Proves No Issue for Lexington SC
If there were any qualms that Lexington SC might have an adjustment moment as former assistant Kosuke Kimura took the reins after Mac Hemmi’s move to the club’s USL Championship squad during the winter break, they were quickly allayed in a dominant 3-1 victory against Fort Lauderdale United FC that saw Emina Ekić make league history and Catherine Barry strike twice.
Saturday night’s performance was another example of how good Lexington can be when on its game. The side sprang out of the gates, recording the first four shots of the contest as Mackenzie Weinert’s eighth-minute goal gave the visitors an early lead on Ekić’s 10th career regular season assist – the first player to reach double digits in Gainbridge Super League history.
They followed that with a brace from Barry either side of halftime that took the veteran forward to nine goals this season overall. Fort Lauderdale offered a fight-back late, but despite Jasmine Hamid’s sterling finish spoiling Kat Asman’s shutout bid, there never looked a way back for the hosts.
The key question now is whether Lexington can back up this display week-in and week-out. The side has produced a handful of dominant performances this season – see its 5-1 win the last time it faced Fort Lauderdale – but has also drawn more games than it has won to sit in second place despite being undefeated in league play. With a key game against Jacksonville on the horizon on February 21, maintaining this standard will be Kimura’s priority.
3. Dallas Trinity Misses Opportunity to Close Out

One of Dallas Trinity’s better traits this season has been its ability to close out results when it strikes first. Prior to Saturday’s clash against Brooklyn FC at the Cotton Bowl, if Trinity scored first, there had only been one instance in which it had failed to take victory.
That made Camryn Lancaster’s well-taken finish against BKFC shortly before the hour-mark a potentially decisive moment as the pint-sized striker struck for a third time against Brooklyn in her career. After Sealy Strawn’s effort with 13 minutes to go hit the woodwork, though, it kept the door open for a Brooklyn side whose persistence in the second half was eventually paid off by Rebecca Cooke’s late equalizer.
Brooklyn may have held far less possession, but it did more with the ball when given the chance. Part of that was the work of Jennifer Cudjoe in the BKFC midfielder being the rock that Trinity attacks foundered on – the veteran won 7 of 8 tackles, 12 of 17 duels and made three interceptions and six recoveries – but also saw Cooke and co. get into better attacking positions consistently. It might have taken two bites at the apple, but Cooke’s finish earned a deserved point and left Trinity with only its second instance of dropped points from a winning position this season.
4. Tampa Bay Sun Show Resolve, But Can’t Break Home Duck
The key question for Tampa Bay Sun FC on Saturday night was how the side would respond to falling behind early against Spokane Zephyr FC at Suncoast Credit Union Field, where the defending title-holders had yet to win in front of its home support this season.
In those terms, the Sun’s response was a good one. The side rallied not once but twice to earn a 2-2 draw against Zephyr as Sydny Nasello and Maddie Parsons found the net either side of halftime to cancel out goals by Spokane’s Lena Silano and Felicia Knox, and got a pair of big saves late on from new addition Liz Beardsley in goal as she made her professional debut on loan from Houston Dash FC.
At the same time, the hosts couldn’t quite get over the finish line, which remains the story of their season. If there was going to be a team to rally back against, Spokane was the side – Zephyr has now dropped a league-high 11 points from winning positions this season, a habit it needs to end if it’s going to break into the playoff positions. With two winnable home games up next after a bye week against DC Power FC and Fort Lauderdale United in the February slate, Tampa Bay needs to find a way to start putting wins on the board.
