Incredible goals and historic wins headlined the weekend, which one gets your vote?

This week, the USL Super League is introducing the first “Super Moments” poll of the season. The league will pick the top four monumental moments from the last week’s matches, from goals and wins to saves and tackles. Then, it’s up to you to cast your vote and select which one is the best Super Moment of the week.

USL Super League Super Moments – Week 5

Allie Thornton (DAL) – #DALvLEX, 9/13/24: Dallas Trinity striker Allie Thornton scored the first hat trick in Super League history on Friday, netting goals in the 33′, 78′ and 90’+ 4.

Brooklyn FC – #BKNvTB, 9/14/24: Brooklyn FC earned its first win of the season on the road against Tampa Bay Sun FC. Isabel Cox scored the lone goal in the 23rd minute to earn the 1-0 victory.

Fort Lauderdale United FC – #DCvFTL, 9/13/24: Goals from Addie McCain and Jasmine Hamid earned Fort Lauderdale United its first-ever win, defeating DC Power 2-0.

Mia Corbin (CAR) – #SPKvCAR, 9/15/24: Washington native Mia Corbin scored her second goal of the season on Sunday in her home state as Carolina Ascent defeated Spokane Zephyr 2-0 at ONE Spokane Stadium.

Dallas dominates at home, three clubs earn road wins | Week 5 Storylines

After an entertaining weekend of matches, four teams walked away with wins for the first time this season. Let’s take a look at some of the history-making goals and victories from Week 5. 

DALLAS NETS SIX GOALS IN FIRST-EVER WIN

Dallas Trinity kept its foot on the gas Friday night when the team secured its first win by defeating Lexington 6-2 at the Cotton Bowl. Arlington, Texas native Allie Thornton scored the league’s first hat trick, Chioma Ubogagu recorded the league’s first brace and Amber Brooks also got on the score sheet in the historic win. 

MCCAIN, HAMID EARN THREE POINTS FOR FTL UTD

Fort Lauderdale United won its first match on Friday on the road against DC Power. Addie McCain and Jasmine Hamid each scored their second goals of the season in the first half, and the team held on to the 2-0 lead to take home the win. 

BROOKLYN UPSETS TAMPA ON THE ROAD

A goal from Isabel Cox in the 23rd minute proved to be the game-winner for Brooklyn, helping the team earn its first win in its second match of the season. Hope Breslin was also credited with Brooklyn’s first-ever assist. 

CAROLINA ASCENT EXTENDS UNBEATEN STREAK AT SPOKANE

Carolina Ascent picked up a 2-0 win over Spokane Zephyr on Sunday, putting its record at 3-0-1. Mia Corbin, a Washington native, scored the opening goal in her home state, and Sydney Studer doubled the lead with her first goal of the season.

Players to Watch

DC – Morgan Aquino: The Australian goalkeeper came up huge for Power FC in its last match in Dallas. Aquino made three incredible saves, two from close range, to keep DC in the match, and she will likely need another strong match to combat the speed and creativity on Fort Lauderdale’s front line. 

FTL – Darya Rajaee: Fort Lauderdale’s captain has proven to be a sturdy and reliable option in the midfield. Rajaee won all five of her duels and recorded two interceptions and two clearances in last week’s match against Carolina Ascent.

DAL – Julia Dorsey: It was Dorsey’s high pressure that caused the turnover which led to the equalizer for Dallas in its last match. The fullback reads the game very well, makes great runs and sends through balls that start off the Trinity’s attack. 

LEX – Marykate McGuire: It was only a matter of time before McGuire found the back of the net. The striker has composure and the ability to shoot from anywhere, which makes her extremely dangerous in the attacking third.

Things to Know

  • Tampa Bay is returning home after earning its first win of the season at Lexington last week. 
  • Brooklyn opened its campaign last week with a 1-1 draw against Spokane. 
  • Brooklyn goalkeeper Sydney Martinez played at the University of South Florida with the Sun’s Viv Bessette and Sydney Nasello under current Tampa head coach Denise Schilte-Brown, who was at the helm of the university’s team for 17 seasons.    
  • Other college connections include Tampa’s Carlee Giammona and Brooklyn’s Kelsey Hill, who played together at Pepperdine from 2020-2022, and Tampa’s Riley Parker and Brooklyn’s Sasha Pickard, who were teammates at Alabama for four years.

TB – Carlee Giammona: Giammona was all over the field for Tampa in its win last week. The midfielder had a goal and an assist by halftime, and she sent in the cross that eventually led to Tampa’s third goal of the night. 

BKN – Mackenzie Pluck: The midfielder was one of the brightest spots for Brooklyn in its season opener. Pluck had two shots, including one that skimmed off the crossbar, and created two chances. As Brooklyn continues growing its cohesion, she will be one to keep an eye on.

SPK – Sarah Clark: The Zephyr’s captain has been holding down the defense for the team over its first two matches. She leads the team in clearances (10), blocks (2) and duels won (14) and is second in interceptions (3), while also having the highest passing accuracy at 87.3%. 

CAR – Addisyn Merrick: In just her first appearance with Carolina last week, Merrick made her presence known. She won seven duels and two tackles, while also tallying six clearances and three interceptions. Merrick is sure to become a cornerstone in the team’s defense moving forward.

  • Carolina Ascent is looking to remain atop the league standings, while No. 3 Fort Lauderdale will play its first match since its opening weekend 1-1 draw against Spokane Zephyr. 
  • Carolina Ascent defender Ashlynn Serepca will battle against Fort Lauderdale United’s Felicia Knox for the first time since the two were playing together for the Alabama Crimson Tide in 2022.   

Players to Watch

CAR – Mia Corbin: The August Goal of the Month winner showed her precision and composure in Carolina’s last match when she blasted a shot from the top of the box to equalize and earn the team a point. She also created four chances while winning six duels during the match. 

FTL – Sh’Nia Gordon: West Virginia alum Sh’Nia Gordon was on fire in the teams opening match in Week 1. The midfielder recorded four shots and created three chances in her first start with the club and will be a key piece in the team’s attack this season.

  • Dallas Trinity will host its league home opener at the historic Cotton Bowl. The Cotton Bowl has a rich history in American soccer, hosting FIFA World Cup matches, CONCACAF Gold Cup matches and international friendlies, including last weekend’s friendly between Dallas Trinity and FC Barcelona.   
  • DC Power will be on the road for its third straight match as it looks to secure its first win and goal.

DAL – Chioma Ubogagu: The English international earned a spot on the August Team of the Month after her stellar performance in Dallas’ opening match against Tampa. Ubogagu has strength and speed on the left side and showed her ability to create opportunities and send great balls into the box. 

DC – Katrina Guillou: The midfielder is a strong asset on both sides of the ball for DC. In Power FC’s last match, Guillou had two tackles and one clearance on defense while also creating one chance and blasting off a shot that forced Tampa’s goalkeeper to make an incredible save.

LEX – Shea Moyer: The captain looked strong in Lexington’s opening match against Carolina, maintaining over 87% passing accuracy while winning six duels and four tackles. She can quickly win the ball in the midfield and get the team into a counterattack, which has proved to be a challenge for Tampa. 

TB – Riley Parker: The striker’s would-have-been first goal of the season was called offside in the Sun’s last match, but it’s only a matter of time before Parker gets on the scoresheet officially. She is tied for second in the league with four shots and will be one of the biggest problems for Lexington’s backline on Sunday.

  • Brooklyn will make its Super League debut on Sunday against Lexington as the eighth and final club to take the field this season. 
  • Brooklyn’s Hope Breslin will go head-to-head with Spokane Zephyr defender Katie Murray after the two were key members of the University of Illinois Fighting Illini from 2017-2018.

SPK – Marley Canales: The former UCLA star held down the midfield for Spokane in its opening match. Canales won five duels, three tackles and recorded two interceptions while maintaining 85% passing accuracy. 

BKN – Sam Rosette: The Bronx native will be one to watch in Brooklyn FC’s first match of the season. The defender played in the Champions League in France after finishing her collegiate career at Villanova. In her two years as a Wildcat, Rosette played over 2,000 minutes and recorded six goals and three assists.

Drama, sold-out crowds & all the vibes: A history-making Inaugural Weekend

A new chapter in women’s soccer history in the United States began in style this weekend as the USL Super League kicked off its inaugural season.

Statisticians will look back at the Super League’s Inaugural Weekend and point to the first starting lineups, the first goalscorers, and the first final results.

But stats don’t tell the story of the moment. 

Sold-out crowds for all three Inaugural Weekend matches, in Charlotte, Spokane, and Tampa, showcased the excitement the women’s soccer community has for more professional women’s soccer in our country. The fans packed the stands to watch top-flight action in their hometown and to be part of another evolution in women’s sports history.

The historic first match in USL Super League history was the place to be in Charlotte. A sold-out crowd of 10,553 was treated to a season-opening victory.

North Carolina native Vicky Bruce scored the game’s only goal, in the 27th minute. She pounced on a loose ball in the box after a long freekick from the right side, pushing it away from Power FC goalkeeper Morgan Aquino and slotting it home for the score. 

The goal sent the home crowd — the largest ever to witness a pro women’s soccer match in the Carolinas — into a frenzied celebration.

DC Power pressed throughout the second half, but the Ascent defense held its ground. When goalkeeper Meagan McClelland made a clutch save in stoppage time, the result was all but confirmed.

The victory certainly thrilled the home fans, but the night was about more than the points. The fans — and the entire community — were clearly excited to be part of a historic moment, to have the chance to say “I was there when the USL Super League began.” They cheered every good play, gasped at every near miss, and stayed long after the final whistle to meet and get selfies with the players.

This was a moment to remember for everyone.

Spokane Zephyr FC 1, Fort Lauderdale United FC 1
Sharing the points on opening night did nothing to dampen the thrill of the either club’s first match in history.

A sold-out crowd at ONE Spokane Stadium were treated to a back-and-forth clash with each side scoring on either side of the halftime break.

Zephyr FC broke the deadlock in the 17th minute when striker Emina Ekic rifled home a penalty. Ekic had created the opportunity after nutmegging FTLUTD defender Sheyenne Allen before being taken down in the box.

Spokane seemed capable of scoring another goal in the second half, but Fort Lauderdale pressed back again and again. The visiting Floridians outshot their hosts 11-6 on the night.

In the 72nd minute, FLTUTD broke through when Addie McCain fired home the equalizer. Both sides had a few late chances but settled for a share of the points on the night.

Tampa Bay Sun FC 1, Dallas Trinity FC 1
Despite humid conditions and temperatures in the 90s at kickoff, the Inaugural Weekend’s closing match provided plenty of energy and action and a thrilling memorable night for the sold-out crowd at Riverfront Stadium.

Dallas dominated most of the match, outshooting Tampa 14-6, and probably deserved three points. They unleashed multiple attacks early on but were thwarted repeatedly by Sun goalkeeper Ashley Orkus.

They finally broke through in first-half stoppage time. Defender Hannah Davison scored off a pinpoint cross from English winger Chioma Ubogagu.

But despite a few more chances and a clear advantage in midfield, Trinity FC could not hold the lead. Off a 70th-minute corner kick, Ashley Clark‘s cross was headed home by Brooke Hendrix, sending the home supporters into wild celebrations.

Things to Know

  • Saturday marks the first ever USL Super League match in league history. The Super League was announced in September 2021, and it received Division One sanctioning in February of this year. 
  • Carolina Ascent FC is a Charlotte-based team led by head coach Philip Poole. The club is the first women’s professional sports team to call Charlotte home since the Charlotte Sting, one of the eight original WNBA franchises that began play in 1997. Learn more about the club here.

CAR – Vicky Bruce: North Carolina native Vicky Bruce was the first player signing for Carolina Ascent. The defender is bringing championship experience to the squad, as she won a NCAA Championship with UNC and won league titles with English club Bristol City and Danish side Fortuna Hjørring. 

DC – Claire Constant: Center back Claire Constant joins Power FC after completing her first professional season with S.C.U. Torreense in Portugal.  Constant scored eight goals in 108 appearances at the University of Virginia and has earned six caps with the Haitian women’s national team, helping them qualify for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

  • Spokane Zephyr FC is the newest professional women’s soccer team in the Pacific Northwest. Zephyr means “a wind from the west,” and the team’s crest is designed to reflect the movement of wind and to evoke the power of change, as the wind does to landscapes over time. Learn more about the club here.
  • Fort Lauderdale United FC is the only professional women’s soccer team in the South Florida region. Tyrone Mears, a former Premier League defender, was announced as the club’s first head coach. Learn more about the club here.

SPK – Sophia Braun: Braun comes to Spokane Zephyr FC with a decorated career, including multiple All-Conference First Teams with Gonzaga University, and 29 appearances for the Argentinian national team. Her biggest game for Argentina came in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup against South Africa, where she scored the country’s first goal of the tournament. She also has experience with Mexican club León Femenil, playing in 18 matches.

FTL – Sh’Nia Gordon: Up top for Fort Lauderdale will be striker Sh’Nia Gordon. The Florida native started in all 95 matches played while at West Virginia University and recorded 25 goals and 15 assists. Gordon has played for various French professional clubs, most notably Dijon FCO, where she scored seven goals in 22 appearances.

  • Tampa Bay Sun FC announced it would join the Super League in May 2023 and would become the highest level of women’s professional sports to ever play in Tampa Bay. The club is spearheaded by President Christina Unkel and head coach Denise Schilte-Brown. Learn more about the club here.
  • Dallas Trinity FC is bringing professional women’s soccer to a city with a rich history surrounding girls’ soccer. In 1973, the Dallas Sting became the first all-girls soccer club in the United States, and the Dallas Cup, founded in 1980, is one of the most prestigious youth soccer tournaments in the country. Learn more about the club here.

TB – Erika Tymrak: Erika Tymrak will bring a veteran presence to Tampa Bay Sun’s midfield this season. Tymrak appeared in over 170 NWSL matches, netted 21 goals and was named 2013 NWSL Rookie of the Year. After years of experience on U.S. youth national teams, she earned her first senior call up in 2013. She also had a phenomenal career at the University of Florida, where she recorded 95 appearances and 32 goals. 

DAL – Haley Berg: Midfielder Haley Berg will be returning to her hometown after spending the last three years playing professionally overseas. Berg also has ties to Texas after playing four seasons at the University of Texas at Austin. She scored 24 goals in 73 appearances and earned multiple honors such as Big 12 Conference Freshman of the Year (2017) and Big 12 Championship All-Tournament Team (2018).

5 Things to Know About Fort Lauderdale United FC

Leading up to the inaugural USL Super League season kicking off this weekend, we’re dropping five facts about each club. Up next is Fort Lauderdale United FC.

1. Fort Lauderdale United signed Tonga’s first female professional soccer player

Laveni Vaka, Tonga’s first female professional soccer player, was signed to Fort Lauderdale United as its first defender on its 2024/25 roster. Vaka grew up in Utah and played five seasons with the Brigham Young University Cougars. She made her international debut in 2018 for the Tonga National Women’s team in the OFC Women’s Nations Cup and scored her first international goal at 16 years old. 2. Tyrone Mears is at the helm

Former Premier League player Tyrone Mears will be the first head coach for Fort Lauderdale United FC. The England native had a noteworthy career of over 17 years before transitioning to coaching. Mears coached in Manchester City and the Elite Club National League (ECNL) before his most recent position as an Academy Coach at Inter Miami CF. 

3. The crest is an ode to the city

As stated by the club: “The Fort Lauderdale United FC crest features the initials FTL prominently displayed, meant to intertwine like the canals of the city. The “glint” represents the vibrant sun bouncing off the waters the region is known for. The club’s colors represent Fort Lauderdale’s world-renowned beaches and shallow waters, with seafoam green contrasting the ocean blue.” 

4. The club plays its home matches at FTL UTD Stadium

Fort Lauderdale United is planning a $7 million upgrade to the stadium on Nova Southeastern University’s campus. The plans include expanding the old Miami Dolphins training facility from 2,000 to almost 7,000 seats. The club will host Dallas Trinity in its home opener on Sunday, September 29. 5. The team adds talent up top with Nia Christopher

Bermuda national team forward Nia Christopher was another star signing for Fort Lauderdale United. The striker has made eight appearances for Bermuda, starting while she was in high school. Christopher also had an impressive career at Towson University, where she finished first in goals (41), points (98) and game-winning goals (17) in program history.
