Late game-winner against DC Power earned defending Players’ Shield holder first win of new campaign

The defending Players’ Shield holder of the Gainbridge Super League, Carolina Ascent FC, was having a difficult go of things as it kicked off its second season.
Over its first five games of the 2025/26 campaign, it had earned just three points and was looking for its first win, having twice been forced to settle for a draw after holding the lead across that span.
That story appeared to be repeating itself as Ascent hosted DC Power FC on October 4, with Carolina having let an early two-goal lead slip away soon into the second half.
Then, Alyssa Walker stepped up to the mark.
Brought on with 15 minutes to go, the 27-year-old popped up at the right place at the right time to head home from close range after Mackenzie George’s cross from the right side had clipped the corner of the crossbar, recording her second goal of the season.
For her standout performance, Walker has been selected as October’s Prinx Impact Sub of the Month, a new series highlighting key substitutions that have changed the course of a game this season.
Walker joined Ascent this season after competing in top-flight leagues in Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. So far this season, she’s been utilized solely as a substitute, but has provided an attacking boost in her six appearances, logging two goals in 81 minutes of action.
“No matter if I’m supporting on the bench or if I’m getting out on the field, I’m going to do anything I can to support my team to help them get the win,” said Walker. “Today that ended up being out on the field. I would be lying if I said it wasn’t a challenge coming off the bench, but as part of being a pro is having a mental game, so you’re ready for the big moments.”
The victory sparked a run for Ascent that has seen the side go undefeated in its last four games overall, winning three times to move into the top three of the standings. For Head Coach Philip Poole, the commitment his players showed to getting the result over the line against DC to break its winless run was exactly what he was looking for.
“There’s two moments that were super important and that typify what we needed to do,” said Poole. “Alyssa Walker smashes herself into the post to score the winner and then Jill Aguilera puts her body on the line in the 100th minute to clear one away and takes a pretty nasty hit because of it. That’s what we’ve been missing.”
