Carolina Ascent can stretch lead as it hosts Sporting JAX, Dallas Trinity’s winning streak gets test in Lexington
Welcome to The Weekender, where we’ll get you set up for what you need to know going into the Week 7 slate in the 2026 Gainbridge Super League fall season.
After DC Power FC jumped into second place in the standings on Tuesday with its late victory against Fort Lauderdale United FC, there are two big games on the slate this weekend, including a top-three clash and an intriguing contest between a rising Dallas Trinity FC and defending titleholders Lexington SC.
Here’s what we’re looking out for.
1. Game of the Weekend – Carolina Ascent FC vs. Sporting Club Jacksonville
As it reaches the midway point of its Fall schedule, Carolina Ascent FC (5-1-0, 15pts) has built a four-point advantage at the top of the Gainbridge Super League standings with its current three-game winning streak and run of three consecutive shutouts positioning it as the team to beat this campaign.
That advantage could get stretched on Saturday night when Ascent plays host to third-placed Sporting Club Jacksonville (3-2-1, 10pts), which arrives at American Legion Memorial Stadium having suffered consecutive defeats for only the third time in its short history and in need of a result to close the gap to the top.
- BUILDING OUT: Carolina’s success has been underpinned by its defensive strength, which has seen the side concede only three goals in its opening six games of the season. Front and center has been goalkeeper Sydney Martinez, who has posted a league-high 23 saves at an 88% save percentage while also building a -3.16 Goals Prevented mark. Carolina is on a 285-minute shutout streak dating to its lone defeat of the season to Tampa Bay Sun FC, putting together a dominant 1-0 win against Brooklyn FC last time out that saw the side outshoot its visitor 25-2.
- DECISION TIME: Jacksonville, meanwhile, may have a decision to make between the sticks as it reaches its midway point of the season. After starting German shot-stopper Jamie Gerstenberg in a four-game undefeated streak to start the year, the side reinserted Kaitlin Parks – who took All-League Second Team honors in the past campaign – only for her to allow four goals in two outings, including a 3-2 defeat to Brooklyn FC. It’s a big spot for Sporting JAX Head Coach Stacey Balaam, with Gerstenberg having the numbers to consider a switch back.
- FINDING FIREPOWER: At the other end of the field, meanwhile, there’s been a contrast as well. Jacksonville’s Baylee DeSmit has made a standout start to the campaign, scoring five goals to lead the Golden Boot race, but hasn’t had a lot of support – no-one else in the squad has more than a single goal across six games. For Carolina, the chances have been there for players like Shea Groom, who got off the mark with the winner against Brooklyn, and Mackenzie George but without much payoff. Groom’s goal against BKFC is the lone finish between the two despite a combined 4.37 Expected Goals mark. Getting those two on track would take Ascent to another level.
As close as their underlying numbers are on paper, the area that could be critical in this matchup is set pieces. Carolina has been excellent in dead ball situations this season, recording four goals – including three from corner kicks – while Jacksonville is one of only two teams that has yet to concede a set piece goal this campaign alongside Dallas Trinity FC.
With Carolina having ended both Sporting JAX’s bid for a Players’ Shield and postseason in back-to-back weeks last May, there should be an added edge this time around as Jacksonville looks to reel in the current league leaders.
2. The Rest of the Weekend’s Action
Lexington SC vs. Dallas Trinity FC (Friday, 7:30 p.m. ET | Peacock)
After a slow start to the season, Dallas Trinity FC (3-2-1, 10pts) has hit its stride with a three-game winning streak to move into the top four in the standings as it reaches its midway point of the campaign.
The next test for new Head Coach Lee Nguyen’s squad is a trip to face defending Gainbridge Super League titleholders Lexington SC (2-2-0, 6pts) on Friday night at Lexington SC Stadium (7:30 p.m. ET | Peacock) as LSC looks to build on its second win of the campaign last time out to stay in touch with the playoff positions with games in hand on its rivals.
- TAKING CONTROL: The theme for Trinity since Nguyen’s arrival this summer has been game control. Over its first six games, no side has maintained a higher average possession rate than Dallas’ 58.8% or completed more passes (2,746) in the Super League, but after a lack of incisiveness in its early contests, the side has found its rhythm in the attacking third over its past three outings. While it remains in the middle of the pack in terms of shots (66) and shots on target (26), Trinity now leads the league with 14 big chances created with Jasmine Hamid (4 goals) being the primary beneficiary.
- SPLITTING LINES: If there’s a side that will challenge that ethos, it’s Lexington, which ranks second to Dallas in average possession (56.3%) and leads the league in passing accuracy rate (84.8%). Coming off an important 1-0 win against Sporting Club Jacksonville last time out, LSC has been incisive in possession – it’s turned 43.7% of its final third entries into touches in the penalty area, the highest rate in the league – and ranks second to Dallas with 13 big chances created despite having played two games fewer.
- BIG GUNS RUNNING: The key element for Lexington now is to get some of its big names rolling. While Hamid has picked up four goals to lead Trinity’s attack, Lexington’s Addie McCain and Catherine Barry haven’t quite hit their stride yet. McCain has scored once in four outings off a league-high 3.75 Expected Goals mark, while Barry has also found the net once on limited opportunities, part of the reason why LSC has scored only five goals in its opening four games. If either player gets on track, it immediately lifts the side back into contention.
Despite last weekend’s victory, with Lexington having already suffered a pair of defeats in its opening four games, the pressure remains to close the gap to the teams above the playoff line. Trinity is one of the teams in that category, and despite it still being early, there’s a case to be made that this is the sort of game that’s going to prove crucial when it’s all said and done.
If Trinity goes into Lexington and takes victory, it not only burnishes the side’s position as a serious contender but could also be a serious blow for the defending titleholders even with their games in hand.
3. Kit of the Week – Sporting Club Jacksonville’s Away Kit

4. Landmark of the Week – Carolina Ascent FC’s Mia Corbin
Corbin enters Saturday’s game against Sporting Club Jacksonville with 19 goals for Ascent in the Super League. She would be the first player to log 20 goals for a single club in league history should she add to her two goals so far this campaign.
