The Gainbridge Super League is averaging nearly one brace a week, with DC Power FC’s Dasia Torbert becoming the latest name to join the list. The former Georgia Bulldog scored her first two professional goals in the first half of Wednesday night’s 3-1 win over Fort Lauderdale United FC.
So, where does it rank among the other two-goal performances of the campaign?
Here’s a look at the five most impressive braces since opening night.
5. Mackenzie George (CAR) vs. Sporting JAX – 9/28
Mackenzie George is the only player this season to record a brace in a loss for her side, but that doesn’t take away from its impact.
Sporting JAX had annihilated Carolina Ascent FC in the opening half of their second meeting of the season and went into halftime with a 3-1 lead. Then, George entered off the bench, and the substitute netted two goals in 20 minutes to put the pressure on the visitors. She has been in the starting lineup ever since, helping power Ascent’s recent four-game undefeated streak.
4. Catherine Barry (LEX) vs. Brooklyn FC – 9/7
Catherine Barry was one of Lexington SC’s offseason signings but had been slightly overshadowed by the big intraleague additions of Emina Ekić and Addie McCain, so we weren’t sure what to expect of the forward, especially after a quiet first match against Fort Lauderdale.
Barry stole the show in Lexington’s first home win of the season, converting two of four shots before halftime. This brace would have been higher on the list had the second goal not come from a Brooklyn giveaway, but it ignited her goalscoring campaign. She’s now second in the Golden Boot race and is the only player to record two braces so far this season.
3. Ashlyn Puerta (JAX) vs. Tampa Bay Sun FC – 8/30
Speaking of the Golden Boot, league leader Ashlyn Puerta had to land somewhere on this list. The 18-year-old scored her first two professional goals on the road against reigning champions Tampa Bay Sun FC to earn Sporting JAX’s first win of the season.
Puerta first drew a foul inside the box and converted from the penalty spot. Four minutes later, she dribbled through traffic and slotted home her second goal of the night to give JAX a 3-0 lead. The brace proved key, giving the visitors enough cushion to earn all three points after conceding two late goals.
2. Dasia Torbert (DC) vs. Fort Lauderdale United FC –11/12
Following the theme of scoring her first two professional goals on the same night, Torbert recorded a brace in the first half of her sixth appearance with DC Power to contribute to the 3-1 victory over Fort Lauderdale.
Gianna Gourley and Emily Colton both assisted Torbert with phenomenal passes behind FTL UTD’s backline, and she converted the 1-v-1 opportunities against goalkeeper Bella Hara assuredly, offering a big confidence boost for the first-year pro.
1. Gianna Gourley (DC) vs. Sporting JAX – 8/23
When Gourley isn’t playing her teammates into space, she’s normally the one putting the ball in the back of the net. The forward opened the campaign with a brace on the road in DC’s first match of the season against Sporting JAX.
Gourley headed in a rebound to equalize before halftime, and when she later noticed JAX goalkeeper Kaitlyn Parks off her line, Gourley chipped the ball into the goal for the lead. The brace – say nothing of her Money Bag celebration – led to a strong opening win for DC and showed the shift in culture taking place at the club after a seventh-place finish in its first campaign.
