We’re three months into the Gainbridge Super League season, and Week 12 saw some streaks snapped while others were extended. Here are our three biggest takeaways from last week’s action.
Lexington looks unstoppable
What team is going to be able to stop Lexington? Right now, we’re still waiting for an opponent to step up to the mark. The Girls in Green have tied the record for the longest undefeated streak in league history at 11 matches, and there are no signs of slowing down.
Hannah Sharts’ long throw-ins are essentially the equivalent of a free kick or corner and have led to numerous goals, including McKenzie Weinert’s on Saturday. Lexington then connected on a 16-pass build up that led to the insurance goal in the 2-0 win against Brooklyn. Lexington’s attack combined with the defense that just earned its fifth clean sheet of the season is more than deserving of its first-place spot in the standings.

Fort Lauderdale is struggling in transition
Fort Lauderdale United left points on the table in its double gameweek because of transition moments both defensively and offensively. DC Power went from goalkeeper Morgan Aquino to the other end of the field in 15 seconds through three passes for Dasia Torbert’s first goal of the night. The second goal came from Anna Bagley winning possession of the ball and DC quickly going on the counterattack. FTL’s defense had no answer.
In the second match of the week, Fort Lauderdale recorded 13 shots to Tampa Bay’s eight but only managed to eke out a draw from Madison McComasky jumping on a bobbled save. Julia Grosso created three great chances in transition that nobody got on the end of. Jasmine Hamid smartly played a quick restart after a foul that caught the Sun off guard, but Kelli Van Treeck couldn’t put it away. These moments are what’s stopping Fort Lauderdale from challenging Lexington at the top of the table.

The young stars are shining in Dallas
No other USL Academy signings are impacting their team quite like Sealey Strawn and Rhea Moore. The duo became the first teenagers in the league to score in the same game in Dallas’ 2-0 win over Spokane Zephyr FC on Saturday to end Trinity’s losing streak. They combined for five of Dallas’ eight shots, scoring two incredible goals that Zephyr’s standout goalkeeper Hope Hisey had no chance of stopping.
Whether Moore and Strawn are in the starting lineup or coming off the bench, they have been consistent game-changers for Dallas this season. They are both shooting at a 50% accuracy rate, and their two goals are tied for most on the team alongside Allie Thornton. Strawn, the reigning Young Player of the Year, has picked up right where she left off last season, but Dallas having another young star in Moore will be huge, especially when Strawn heads to UNC in the spring.
